Capture One Pro Culling & Metadata Sync

Seamlessly import BestShots ratings, color tags, and subject metadata into Capture One Pro sessions and catalogs using standard XMP sidecars.

High-End Studio Workflows in Capture One

Capture One Pro is the premier RAW converter and tethering solution for high-end studio, fashion, and commercial photography. Studios working under demanding deadlines need culling results that transfer instantly into their Capture One sessions and catalogs.

BestShots integrates directly with Capture One Pro through industry-standard XMP companion sidecars, ensuring your star ratings, color tags, and curated selections synchronize without modifying a single byte of your master camera RAW files.

Metadata Mapping Specification

BestShots maps curation decisions directly into standard Capture One metadata conventions:

Step-by-Step Capture One Pro Sync Workflow

Follow these steps to synchronize BestShots culling sidecars into your Capture One session:

  1. Enable Sidecar Sync in Preferences:
    • In Capture One, navigate to Capture One > Preferences (macOS) or Edit > Preferences (Windows).
    • Go to the Image tab, locate Sidecar XMP, and set Auto Sync sidecar XMP to Load or Full Sync.
  2. Export with Original Filenames:
    • In BestShots, open your project and click Export (or press E).
    • Choose XMP Sidecar & Workflow Bundle (.zip).
    • Confirm that Photo & Sidecar Naming Format is set to Keep Original Camera Filenames ({originalName}) so each sidecar filename matches your camera RAW file stem exactly.
  3. Move Sidecars into your Session Folder:
    • Extract the downloaded ZIP archive.
    • Copy the .xmp companion sidecars into your Capture One session's Capture folder (or catalog directory) right next to your original camera RAW files.
  4. Synchronize Folder:
    • In Capture One's Library tool tab, right-click the Capture folder and choose Synchronize... (or select all images and choose Metadata > Reload Metadata).
    • Click Sync in the confirmation dialog.

All star ratings, keeper tags, and green color labels appear instantly across your thumbnail browser.

Streamlining Capture One Previews with Desktop Scripts

High-volume commercial shoots often strain Capture One preview caches when importing thousands of non-keeper frames. You can optimize your session performance using the bundled desktop scripts:

  1. In BestShots, export the XMP Sidecar & Workflow Bundle (.zip) with 1-click organizer scripts included.
  2. Extract the bundle and place organize_keepers.bat (Windows) or organize_keepers.command (macOS) into your main camera RAW directory.
  3. Run the script: it immediately isolates your approved keeper RAW files into a new bestshots_keepers directory in under a second.
  4. Point your Capture One session directly to bestshots_keepers as your Capture folder.

This workflow ensures Capture One only imports and generates high-resolution previews for your curated selections, saving disk space and hours of preview processing time.

Tip

Setting Auto Sync sidecar XMP to Load in Capture One allows you to drop updated .xmp sidecars into your folder at any time, refreshing ratings without restarting your session.
