Adobe Lightroom Classic XMP Sync

Synchronize BestShots AI culling decisions, star ratings, and keywords into Adobe Lightroom Classic with non-destructive XMP companion sidecars.

Zero File Mutation Post-Production Sync

Professional photographers rely on Adobe Lightroom Classic, Capture One Pro, and Photo Mechanic for high-end editing and client delivery. Proprietary cloud tools that force studios into closed ecosystems disrupt proven post-production pipelines.

BestShots is built around the open Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) companion sidecar standard. All AI culling decisions, star ratings, and subject tags synchronize directly into your desktop catalog without modifying a single byte of your master files.

The Sidecar Philosophy & Non-Destructive Guarantee

An XMP sidecar is a lightweight, standardized companion file that resides alongside your camera RAW image, sharing the exact same base filename:

The Zero RAW Mutation Guarantee

BestShots categorically promises:

  • Zero Byte Changes: We never write directly into the header, sensor payload, or maker-notes of your original camera RAW files (.ARW, .CR3, .NEF, .RAF, .DNG).
  • Bit-for-Bit Integrity: Your master files remain cryptographically identical before and after using BestShots.
  • Universal Portability: If you decide to archive your shoot, your exported .xmp sidecars remain completely valid and readable forever by any software supporting industry-standard metadata.

Standard Metadata Mappings

BestShots translates curation decisions into standard Adobe metadata tags recognized immediately by Lightroom Classic:

In addition to star ratings and labels, detailed rationale summaries (including focal sharpness, eye openness, and burst group details) populate the image description and caption fields.

Step-by-Step Lightroom Classic Sync Workflow

Follow this procedure to export and sync your BestShots curation decisions into your Adobe Lightroom Classic catalog:

Step 1: Export Workflow Bundle from BestShots

  1. In your project workspace, click Export in the top toolbar (or press E).
  2. Select destination: XMP Sidecars & Workflow Bundle (.zip).
  3. In the export settings:
    • Photo & Sidecar Naming Format: Keep the default Keep Original Camera Filenames (e.g. 080A0386 · Recommended). This guarantees that exported .xmp sidecars share the identical base name of your camera RAW files (such as _DSC1200.CR3 paired with _DSC1200.xmp).
    • Metadata & Information: Ensure Include 1-Click Desktop Organizer scripts is checked.
    • (Optional) Check Include 2048px high-resolution WebP previews if you need offline client proofs or quick web viewing.
  4. Click Start Export and download the ZIP archive.

Step 2: Copy Sidecars into your RAW Directory

Extract the .zip archive. Copy the .xmp files directly into the folder where your original RAW files reside on your local hard drive or external SSD. Verify that the filenames match exactly (for example, 080A0386.CR3 alongside 080A0386.xmp).

Step 3: Read Metadata in Lightroom Classic

  1. Launch Adobe Lightroom Classic and open your catalog.
  2. Switch to Library Module Grid View by pressing G.
  3. Select all photos in the folder (Ctrl + A on Windows or ⌘ + A on macOS).
  4. In the top application menu, select Metadata > Read Metadata from Files (or press Ctrl + Alt + S on Windows / Cmd + Option + S on macOS).
  5. When the confirmation dialog appears, click Read.
Read Metadata from File?

Reading metadata will overwrite any existing unsaved changes in the Lightroom catalog with the values from the XMP file.

Step 4: Filter by Keepers & Heroes

Immediately upon reading metadata:

  • All Keepers display their 5-star ratings.
  • The Filter Bar (\) allows you to isolate Rating >= 5 to reveal your curated set.
  • All detected tags (ai-keep, stack-hero, person:Bride) appear in the Keywording panel for instant filtering.

1-Click Desktop Organizer (Zero Software Required)

If you want to isolate your keeper RAW files on your local drive without opening Lightroom or any editing software, use the included desktop organizer scripts:

  1. Extract the exported ZIP bundle.
  2. Copy organize_keepers.bat (Windows) or organize_keepers.command (macOS) into the folder containing your camera RAW files.
  3. Run the script:
    • On Windows: Double-click organize_keepers.bat.
    • On macOS: Double-click organize_keepers.command (pre-configured with executable permissions).
  4. Result: The script reads the list of approved keeper photos, creates a new bestshots_keepers directory, and copies all keeper RAW files into it in under a second. Rejected photos remain untouched in the source folder.

Interactive Visual Summary Guide (README.html)

Every exported workflow bundle contains a self-contained, responsive README.html file. Opening this file in your browser reveals an offline visual dashboard featuring:

  • Shoot Overview: Total photo count, keepers count, rejection count, and keeper percentage.
  • Camera & Lens Summary: Gear inventory of camera bodies and lenses used during the shoot.
  • Tool Walkthroughs: Tabbed, step-by-step instructions for Adobe Lightroom Classic, Capture One Pro, and Desktop Organizer scripts.

Free Software Verification (No Paid Lightroom License Needed)

If you do not have an active Adobe Lightroom Classic subscription, you can fully verify BestShots XMP sidecars using these free alternatives:

Adobe Bridge is Adobe's official digital asset manager. It uses the exact same Adobe Camera Raw metadata engine as Lightroom Classic, and it is completely free with any free Adobe ID without requiring a paid Creative Cloud subscription:

  1. Download and install Adobe Bridge via the free Adobe Creative Cloud desktop application.
  2. Copy your exported .xmp sidecars into the folder with your camera RAW files.
  3. Open Adobe Bridge and browse to that folder.
  4. Verification: Bridge immediately reads the .xmp sidecars. Star ratings and color labels appear directly below every thumbnail. Filter by rating on the left panel to isolate keepers.

Method 2: Darktable (Free & Open Source RAW Developer)

Darktable is an open-source photography workflow application available on Windows, macOS, and Linux:

  1. Download and install Darktable from darktable.org.
  2. On first launch, Darktable asks how to handle sidecar files: choose after edit (Recommended). This ensures Darktable reads BestShots sidecars upon import without altering them.
  3. In the top-left import panel, click folder and select your photo directory.
  4. Verification: In Lighttable grid view, Darktable displays the imported photos with their AI star ratings.

Note

Adobe Lightroom Web (lightroom.adobe.com) is a cloud-storage viewer. It does not read local .xmp companion files from your computer and lacks the desktop metadata engine found in Lightroom Classic.
